2019 was a landmark year for industry shows, and by attending key events both in SA and overseas, the Kemtek team was able to expand our business network and interact with print industry leaders. These events and expos gave us an opportunity to showcase our printing technology solutions and see how global players are addressing the same issues. Like all the best events, they provided opportunities to learn as well as to teach.
As we near the end of 2019, let’s look back on four of the most important events of the year: Propak Africa, the Auto ID Indaba, Label Expo Europe and FESPA Africa.
With its focus on packaging – one of the fastest-growing areas of digital printing – Propak Africa gave us the opportunity to showcase cutting-edge technology in the shape of the HP Indigo 6900 digital printing press.
The capabilities of this digital narrow web label and packaging printer were put to good use during the event. In combination with HP’s Mosaic SmartStream, multiple variations on a theme were created to illustrate the power and potential of mass customisation.
In this instance, the HP Indigo 6900 was used to create unique packaging for the REDROCK beers given to attendees at our on-stand networking event. Delegates agreed that this gift – and especially its packaging – were a refreshing illustration of how digital printing is transforming the packaging industry. Learn more here.
The Kemtek Bar Coding and Labelling Indaba certainly lit up the winter of 2019. Various Auto ID manufacturers seized the opportunity to demonstrate their latest innovations, which ranged from Argox asset paging tags for inventory control and management, to the same company’s wristband printing application.
This offers an improved, streamlined experience to consumers attending festivals or concerts, and can be combined with QR codes to be used with cashless payment methods in crowded hospitality and merchandising settings.
Labels and bar codes are of course only of value if they can be easily read, and the range of rugged mobile computers on display illustrated the extent to which manufacturers have risen to the challenge of creating barcode scanners that can be used in the most demanding environments, from warehouses to the great outdoors. This year saw the 40th edition of Label Expo Europe, and it gave the Kemtek team an opportunity to immerse themselves in a world of innovative labelling and packaging technology with global partners HP Indigo, Flint Flexographic and Xeikon ThermoflexX. Live demonstrations in particular illustrated the extent to which labelling technology is advancing.
These demonstrations included HP Indigo showcasing the digital pouch making capabilities of the HP Indigo 20000 digital press and tapping into the current trend for food packaging that not only retains the freshness of its contents but has a reduced ecological footprint through the use of less raw material content per packaging solution.
Label Expo Europe 2019 was the largest and most international edition of this event yet, with almost 38 000 visitors from 140 countries in attendance. As always, it was an honour to represent the Rainbow Nation of South Africa.
In contrast to Label Expo Europe, FESPA Africa took place much closer to home, in September 2019. True to its billing, this was an explosion of possibilities, and it gave us an opportunity to demonstrate two innovative products at opposite ends of the scale spectrum.
The Brother ScanNCut SDX1200 home, hobby and small business cutter lets people express their creativity when it comes to gifting and creating decorative and useful items on a small scale. In contrast, the Epson SureColor SC-S40610 large format printer delivers signage solutions that permit businesses to capture the attention of both customers and passers-by.
In a world that’s moving increasingly online, physical signage still has a role to play in promoting business awareness – just as these key events helped Kemtek boost awareness of printing technology throughout 2019.
