As consumers become more health conscious, they are looking to add more fresh fruit to their diets. When they make their choices, they want to buy only the best, so how fruit is packaged and how it looks makes a big difference to sales.

Thanks to the current focus on plastic waste, consumers are also actively seeking to reduce the amount of plastic that they use and discard. These two trends were very much at the forefront of the minds of SCHOONBEE LANDGOED when they approached Didget with a brief to refresh their export packaging for fresh grapes.

The client had three main requirements for their new flexible packaging: it must involve a reduction in packaging materials (for both environmental and cost reasons); it must contribute to a longer product shelf life; and it must have a very short production lead time.

Using their HP Indigo 20000 digital printing press, Didget SA was able to produce an incredible 500 million top lid films (in seven versions) in just seven days. In the process, they reduced the amount of material used by some 50% and boosted the shelf life of the fresh grapes.

The client was so impressed by the results that they are now considering moving the remaining 80% of their flexible packaging requirements from traditional flexo printing to digital printing. The quality, short lead times and flexibility offered by digital print has made a compelling case for making this change.
